MILDRED PIERCE (1945, Michael Curtiz, 111 min.)
Beset by bad husbands, a greedy, destructive daughter, and worse judgment, Joan Crawford bursts back onto the screen after a two-year hiatus in this tale of a family roiling with conflict. Murder, adultery, and betrayal are choreographed with a bravado that just managed to skirt the censors. Crawford captured the Oscar for her mesmerizing portrayal of the selfless-or-pathetic Mildred. Ann Blyth is the evil daughter Veda, and Bruce Bennett and Zachary Scott are the husbands, and ultimately the victims.
