ALICE ADAMS (1935, George Stevens, 99 min.)
Booth Tarkington’s sweet and sad social climber comes to life courtesy of Katharine Hepburn’s luminous performance. Fred MacMurray is the charming and unpretentious young man who is captured by her vivacity. Small-town America in the throes of the second industrial revolution is beautifully evoked in this minor gem.
