K-12 Resources

Discovery Kits

With Discovery Kits Online, Eastman House makes its collections and expertise available for teachers, students, and recreational learners. In the past, regional educators could visit the Museum to borrow small boxes (Discovery Kits) filled with materials that exemplified key elements of the Museum's collection. Now, these resources can be distributed freely on the web for all to use. The educational kits below have been developed with the help of educators who provided Museum staff with guidance in K-12 curricular goals and appropriate assessment methodologies. Each unit (kit) is designed to supply classroom-ready lesson plans and study materials that can be used in direct online interaction or as downloadable slide shows and printable resources for offline use in classrooms lacking Internet connectivity.

The Reading Room

The Reading Room, a multi-purpose resource center for teachers, is located on the second floor of the Eastman House. There is a conference table and study area that teachers may use to review our Discovery Kits, exhibition slide sets, videotapes, or books for loan. The room is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. All reading room materials may be borrowed free of charge.

In-Services

Want to learn more? Teacher in-services are held throughout the school year to inform educators about museum exhibitions and Education Department offerings.

Special Projects

Thinking about a new project? George Eastman House Education is a long-standing partner in collaborative programs within and outside New York State with teachers, schools, and arts-in-education agencies.

Image Magazine Online

Eastman House is converting the first fifty years of its journal, IMAGE, for online distribution. The project to be completed in late 2008, will perform full text scanning of each issue (for Optical Character Recognition) to produce downloadable PDF files. We have provided a few early samples for your review.

Alexander Gardner's Sketchbook of the Civil War

In presenting the PHOTOGRAPHIC SKETCH BOOK OF THE WAR to the attention of the public, it is designed that it shall speak for itself. The omission, therefore, of any remarks by way of preface might well be justified; and yet, perhaps a few introductory words may not be amiss.
