Rodrigues is one of the true heavyweights of the new international cinema. His last film, To Die Like A Man, blended melodramatic elements from directors such as Douglas Sirk and Pedro Almodovar to create a singular experience. Similarly, The Last Time I Saw Macao is another hybrid, this time of Josef von Sternberg and Chris Marker. Beginning with a reference to von Sternberg’s Jane Russell melodrama Macao, the film then takes on the mode of a detective story-cum-travelogue, told from the viewpoint of the filmmaker, who narrates his attempt to track down a mysterious femme fatale from his past. Part sci-fi flick, part essay film, part B-grade noir, The Last Time I Saw Macao is playfully unique.
