Film Critic Jack Garner: Screening Introduction and Book Signing

On Wednesday November 13, 2013 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Dryden Theatre

Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe in a promotional still for How to Marry a Millionaire (Jean Negulesco, US 1953)

Film critic Jack Garner will introduce the film How to Marry a Millionaire (Jean Negulesco, US 1953, 95 min., 35mm) and sign copies of his new book, From My Seat on the Aisle: Movies and Memories (Rochester, NY: RIT Press, 2013). Screening starts at 8 p.m.

Originally heralded the “Most Glamorous Entertainment of Your Lifetime,” How to Marry a Millionaire was the first film completed in CinemaScope, but became the second released. The amusing comedy set in midtown Manhattan—in which three “gold digging” women rent a posh penthouse in a shameless attempt to marry millionaires—delightfully showcases the talents of Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable. Although their sights are set on a Rockefeller or a Vanderbilt, their search yields more duds than studs, resulting in a series of charming misadventures. Joseph MacDonald’s bright, vibrant cinematography takes full advantage of the CinemaScope frame.

This film screening is part of the four-part series in the Dryden Theatre accompanying the exhibition Bigger Than Life: CinemaScope at 60
