Handmade Gelatin Photographic Paper
From March 17, 2014 through March 20, 2014 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at George Eastman House
Former Eastman Kodak emulsion engineer Ron Mowrey and Historic Process Specialist Nick Brandreth will guide participants through the procedures of making this simple gelatin photographic paper emulsion.
The class will include how to hand-coat the silver chloride Azo emulsion onto plain and baryta-coated papers, as well as printing and processing. Participants will also receive tips on how to vary the contrast of this easy-to-make emulsion. This is a great entry-level workshop for the curious and those who would like to build upon the basics of gelatin photographic technology at the twilight of its manufacture.
Process Historian Mark Osterman will also present a lecture on the evolution of emulsions and show rare examples of silver gelatin photographs by the masters of photography from the archives of George Eastman House. Each participant will receive a complete set of step-by-step instructions and other readings on the topic of gelatin emulsion making.
