The Gender Show

June 8, 2013 through September 29, 2013 at George Eastman House.

The Gender Show explores ways gender has been presented in photographs, ranging from archetypal to non-traditional to subversive representations, with a special emphasis on the performances that photography can encourage or capture.

The exhibition will feature more than 130 photographs from the George Eastman House collection, spanning from the 19th century to the present, by a wide range of artists including Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Steichen, Nicholas Muray, Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Andy Warhol, Barbara Norfleet, Mary Ellen Mark, Cindy Sherman and Chuck Samuels.

Ambrotypes and tintypes are the hottest alternative processes used in fine art photography today. In this intensive five-day workshop, participants will be guided through the basics of making these unique positive wet-collodion images by Mark Osterman, internationally recognized as a modern master of the collodion process.



Collodion Negatives: Wet & Dry

September 16, 2013 through September 20, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at George Eastman House.

Waiting list only  This five-day, intensive, hands-on negative workshop is for the experienced collodion ambrotypist or tintypist who wants to get to the next level. Taught by Mark Osterman, participants will learn the theory that sets the collodion negative apart from ambrotypes and tintypes. The rare dry collodion process will also be taught, allowing the photographer to shoot negatives in the field without the need for a darkroom or silver bath on location.

Make your own ghost images in our first ever Spirit Photography Workshop. You’ll begin by learning the basics of making wet collodion tintypes by process historian Mark Osterman in the famous Scully & Osterman Skylight Studio. Then you’ll be shown the 19th-century secrets of making ghost imagery in a workshop that promises to be a great experience for everyone.



Carbon Transfer Printing

November 4, 2013 through November 6, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at George Eastman House.

Unlike silver prints, the carbon print image is formed with the same pigments used for centuries in artists’ oil colors. The key to making carbon prints is a sheet of pigmented gelatin called a “tissue.” These can be purchased, but are expensive and limited to only a handful of colors. In this workshop, you’ll get hands-on experience in how to make carbon prints in any color using watercolors available at your local art store.



NEW: Opaltypes & Orotones

November 18, 2013 through November 22, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at George Eastman House.
Part of the Photography Workshops series.

The opaltype, or milk glass positive, is an image on a white glass plate. Used primarily for portraits from the late 1860s to the 1930s, originals are difficult to find. Orotones, popularized by Edward Curtis, are images on clear glass with highlights of gold-colored powder. Learn both of these rare processes in the same workshop.  



NEW: Framing Alternative Photographs

December 9, 2013 through December 11, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at George Eastman House.
Part of the Photography Workshops series.

Making a beautiful image with historic or alternative processes requires a lot of hard work, careful craftsmanship and a strong commitment to an aesthetic. The same amount of attention should go toward framing your images. In this workshop, participants will learn how to mat and frame photographs from Rheytchul Kimmel in the Museum’s Creative Services Department.
