Contemporary—and often controversial—artist Roger Ballen is known for his thought-provoking photography and his particular attention to rich detail, photographing his human and animal subjects in complex scenes filled with symbolism.
The 84 black-and-white images of this retrospective are an expanded version of the exhibition currently showing with great success at George Eastman House. The exhibi¬tion showcases selections from all of Ballen’s major photographic projects, centering on two of his most recent series, “Shadow Chamber” (2002-2004) and “Boarding House” (2004-2008). Additional little-known early work as well several images from the recent, not-yet-published series “Birds”, complete this important exhibition.
