Not A Cornfield
A photography and video installation capturing the transformation of a 32-acre brownfield in the historic center of Los Angeles into a cornfield for one agricultural cycle between May 2005 and May 2006. This project — which involved 1,500 truckloads of clean dirt and 1 million corn seeds — was created by artist Lauren Bon to bring forth questions surrounding the nature of urban public spaces and convey redemption and hope. The artwork was a visually stunning environmental action and a relational initiative that generated a social and cultural hub. It was also an experiment in project-based philanthropy that irrigated the future site of a new state park. The exhibition is a product of the Metabolic Studio, a direct charitable activity of the Annenberg Foundation.

Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art
“Dutch landscape” evokes an immediate mental picture of the idyllic agrarian landscape rooted in the tradition of Dutch landscape painting, but today the Netherlands is known for its planned, manipulated landscape and nature. Since the end of the 1980s, a number of Dutch photographers and filmmakers have been taking exactly this artificial character of the Dutch landscape and nature as their point of departure. This exhibition, curated by Maartje van den Heuvel, presents work by contemporary photographers Hans Aarsman, Wout Berger, Cary Markerink, Edwin Zwakman, Marnix Goossens, Frank van der Salm, Driessens/Verstappen, and others.
The Eastman House exhibition of Nature as Artifice is made possible in part by the Mondriaan Foundation and The Consulate General of the Netherlands.

New Topographics
The exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape, held in 1975 at George Eastman House, signaled the emergence of a new approach to landscape photography. A new version of this seminal exhibition, organized with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, will re-examine more than 100 works from the 1975 show, as well as some 30 prints and books by other relevant artists to provide additional historical and contemporary context. This reconsideration demonstrates both the historical significance of these pictures and their continued relevance today. After its Eastman House display, New Topographics will travel to eight international venues. The new presentation and tour of New Topographics is made possible by a generous grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art.
