In Our Time:
The World as Seen by Magnum Photographers

Leonard Freed (American, b. 1929). MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., AFTER RECEIVING THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, USA, 1963. Gelatin silver print. George Eastman House collection. |
Celebrating the first 50 years of
Magnum Photos, the world's most
renowned photographer-owned
photographic agency, In Our Time:
The World as Seen by Magnum Photographers
represents 60 photographers.
From images by George Rodger,
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa,
and David Seymour to contemporary
photographers, including Sebasti‹o
Salgado, Chris Steele--kins, and
James Nachtwey, these 150 images
have helped to create a vivid record
of momentous events throughout the
world.
Magnum Photos, Inc. was
founded in 1947 by George Rodger,
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa,
David Seymour (Chim), Werner
Bischof, William Vandivert, Rita Vandivert,
and Maria Eisner as a way for
photographers to regain control over
who, where, when, and how their images
were used. Despite sometimes
severe financial crises and disputes
between members, Magnum continues
to thrive after 60 years.
The exhibition was organized
in 1989 to pay homage to Magnum
Photos' anniversary and the 150th anniversary of the invention
of photography. Sponsored by the
Professional Photography Division
of Eastman Kodak Company, and coordinated
by the American Federation
of Arts, two exhibitions toured
simultaneously in the United States
and Europe through 1992.
In 2000, the entire exhibition
was presented as a gift to George
Eastman House in order to continue
its tour. A catalog representing all
images is available from W. W. Norton
& Company.
