Picturing What Matters:
An Offering of Photographs
Fully Booked

Astronaut David R. Scott, Commander (American, active 1971). [Apollo 15. Astronaut James Irwin gives salute beside U.S. flag during EVAÉ], August 1, 1971. Chromogenic development print.

For more than fifty years George Eastman House has collected and preserved photographs that matter to the world, to our nation, and to our community. Photographs give meaning to our lives. They shape our memory. The events of September 11, 2001, and all that has followed on screen and in print has framed anew the question of what we value as individuals, and as a society. These events compelled our institution to respond by looking at our treasures with new eyes. For more than fifty years George Eastman House has collected photographs that matter to the world and to our community. Photographs give meaning to our lives and shape our memory. The events of 9/11 and all that has followed have framed anew the question of what we value as individuals and as a society.

In response, the staff of George Eastman House selected 128 photographs from the collection that spoke to them. Diverse in subject they are united by a common spirit and represent themes of family, working and leisure, national milestones and crises, patriotism, and glimpses of life.

The 108 photographers are also diverse. W. Eugene Smith's The Walk to Paradise Garden and Joe Rosenthal's Old Glory Goes Up on Mt. Suribachi and Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother; Robert Frank; Lewis Hine; Walker Evans-all make their contributions to the exhibition.

Community involvement is highly recommended, including asking for submissions of personal pictures "that matter" for display in an adjunct exhibition.
