Truth Beauty: Pictorialism and the Photograph as Art
February 7-June 21, 2009
Truth Beauty draws from the extensive collections of George Eastman House. With over 140 works from such well-known photographers Alvin Langdon Coburn, Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz, the exhibition illustrates the Pictorialism movement's progression from its early influences to its lasting impact on photography and art. This exhibition shows the rise of Pictorialism in the late 19th century from a desire to elevate photography to an art form equal to painting, drawing, and watercolor.

Not a Cornfield
June 20-September 20, 2009
Not a Cornfield is a large-scale temporary environmental sculpture project where a derelict 32-acre industrial brownfield in downtown Los Angeles was transformed into a "green" sculpture of corn for one agricultural cycle. The project entailed cleaning and replenishing the soil, planting almost one million corn seeds, and harvesting an abundant crop. This unique urban sculpture confronts the nature of urban public space and public art, the politics of land use, and the radical possibilities of urban greening and community responsibilities.

New Topographics
July 11-October 4, 2009
The exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape, held in 1975 at George Eastman House, signaled the emergence of a new approach to landscape photography. A new version of this seminal exhibition, organized with the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, AZ, will re-examine a selection of 120 works from the 1975 show, as well as some 30 prints and books by other relevant artists to provide additional historical and contemporary context. This reconsideration demonstrates both the historical significance of these pictures and their continued relevance today.

Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in the Photograph as Art
July 11-October 4, 2009
Dutch landscape evokes an immediate mental picture of the idyllic agrarian landscape rooted in the tradition of Dutch landscape painting, but today the Netherlands is know for its planned, manipulated landscape and nature. Since the end of the 1980s, a number of Dutch photographers and filmmakers have been taking exactly this artificial character of the Dutch Landscape and nature as their point of departure.
