New Garden Classes Offered at Eastman House

Adult gardeners of all levels can enjoy the rare opportunity to learn hands-on in the Museum’s historic garden with a new series of Saturday morning garden classes. Taught by Landscape Curator Amy Kinsey and Head Gardener Andy Joss, participants receive general and specific information for each topic, with time spent training in the garden as an outdoor “classroom.” Popularity of garden-related tours, lectures, and coffee talks prompted the Museum to develop this learning series. “It has always been part of the goal of the landscape department to offer garden classes, and we will be testing the waters with the hope that they continue every year,” said Kinsey. Classes are held May through September, on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Topics scheduled are Spring Herbaceous Perennial Propagation (May 9), Spring Pruning (June 13), Summer Garden Maintenance (July 11), Summer Herbaceous Perennial Propagation (August 8), and Fall Pruning (September 12). Garden tools will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. A tool and apparel list for each class will be mailed in advance. Cost for the entire five-class series is $150/$125 members. Individual classes are $30/$25 members. Class sizes are limited; early registration is suggested. For information, call (585) 271-3361 ext. 224.

Eastman House seeking garden docents

Eastman House is seeking volunteers with an interest in gardening to serve as garden docents, to interpret the historic gardens for visitors from around the world. If you enjoy meeting people and have an interest in history and horticulture, we invite you to join our team. The Museum is also seeking volunteers to help maintain the historic gardens. Talk with fellow gardening enthusiasts as you weed and cultivate. Commune with nature as your prune. Garden docent training classes will be held 4:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, April 27, 28, 29, and May 4, 5, 6. If interested, please contact gardens@geh.org.
