Frequently Asked Questions: Landscape Collection

How many people take care of the gardens and grounds?

A landscape curator manages all aspects of the landscape collection. Maintenance is provided by one year-round full-time groundskeeper; one seasonal (April-November) garden assistant; two summer horticulture interns; and 15-20 seasonal garden volunteers. Back to the top of the page

How old is the copper beech tree in the northwest corner of the vista?

We believe it is approximately 150 years old. Of course, the only way to really determine its age is to count the annual rings inside the trunk. Back to the top of the page

Will the fountains in the 17th century Trani-stone wellheads be restored?

Yes, they will be restored but there are no immediate plans to do so. Back to the top of the page

Do the goldfish survive the winter in the terrace garden’s lily pool?

Yes. The pool contains about a two-foot depth of water that mostly freezes over during the winter. The goldfish nestle into the bottom layer of water where there is enough algae and oxygen to sustain them through their hibernation. Back to the top of the page

Can the gardens be used for weddings or wedding photos?

The gardens are available for wedding photos from Memorial Day weekend through October. Wedding photos can be taken in the west and rock gardens only. The west garden is available for weddings. Reservations can be made through the Special Events Manager, (585) 271-3361 ext. 222, beginning on January 1st. Back to the top of the page
