Chuck McCann & Friends present “Radio Comedy: The Sounds of Laughter” Saturday, Aug. 20

Golden Age of radio show recreates live radio shows in Dryden Theatre from the Jack Benny Program, Dragnet, and Laurel and Hardy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House invites you to travel back to the Golden Age of radio and film on Saturday, Aug. 20, with Chuck McCann & Friends, as they recreate classic radio plays including Laurel and Hardy, the Jack Benny Program, and parodies of Dragnet and The Shadow. There will be two performances of “Radio Comedy: The Sounds of Laughter,” at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

McCann has acted in numerous films and TV shows, including The Projectionist and Boston Legal plus numerous commercials his own TV sketch-comedy show in the 1960s. He is an award-winning voiceover talent, performing more than 1,000 voices in the world of animation, including Yogi Bear, Bugs Bunny, the “Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" bird, characters in Ducktales, and The Thing on the Fantastic Four. He has been a huge hit at comic-con conventions and also was a close friend of Stan Laurel’s.

Other stars appearing on the Dryden stage will be voice-over artist Corrine Orr (Speed Racer cartoons, CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, and Snuggle the bear in Snuggle fabric softener commercials); actor Michael C. Gwynne (Payday and the Duke of Rock in Howard Stern's Private Parts); and actor Will Hutchins (starred in TV’s Sugarfoot and as Dagwood on Blondie). The show director is Anthony Tollin, a colorist for DC Comics who is regarded as the leading expert on The Shadow. Local actors will be portraying roles as varied as Winston Churchill, Cary Grant, and Jimmy Cagney.

Tickets to either performance event are $25 ($20 Eastman House members) and are on sale at the Lipson Welcome Center at Eastman House or online at eastmanhouse.org. A reception with the cast at 6 p.m. is $75 and includes the show ticket cost. Reception tickets can be purchased by phone at (585) 271-3361 ext. 214.
