For Release 2012-11-01

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Dryden Theatre presents a series of five films by Oscar® winner Hayao Miyazaki, who is not only one of the most respected animation directors in Japan but also a critically acclaimed leader of animation filmmaking worldwide.

He founded the hugely successful and well-respected Studio Ghibli in Tokyo in 1985 with fellow animation director Isao Takahata. Spirited Away, perhaps the best known of the studio’s features in the United States and which screens at the Dryden Nov. 23 and 25, won the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature in 2002. Time magazine named Miyazaki to its 2005 list of the “100 Most Influential People.”

“Cultivating a creative force of talented directors, animators, and storytellers under the revered brilliance of Miyazaki and Takahata, Studio Ghibli’s films have been praised for their originality, dazzling animation, and epic storytelling,” said Lori Donnelly, Dryden Theatre film programmer. “The films have become a beloved part of Japanese popular culture and have garnered worldwide acclaim from audiences and critics alike.”
